What I Wore Wednesday

I am so bad about taking pictures of my outfits (not that it's something I need to feel guilty about) but I do like being able to look back at combos of things I've come up with from my closet so when I'm feeling stumped, I can just come back here... so here I am, with a sparse WIWW.

90% of my wardrobe comes from the thrift store. I love to find unique items there, and it's definitely easier on the budget! These great wide-leg trouser jeans are from there, and this top was a recent find. I love the little details on it!

These platform sandals were bought at a tent sale at a local shop. I've discovered that a platform sandal is a perfect way to dress up an outfit comfortably.

One of my other favorite places to shop is GroopDealz.  It's a daily deals site, and most of their items come from cute online boutiques. I'd been looking for a tiered maxi skirt like this for a while, so when this one showed up for $15 on there, I snagged it. It's super comfy!

That's all I got this week. :)

WIWW!

Woohoo! I made it to a second week of What I Wore Wednesday!  I wanted to start this week off with my little one's special outfit this week.

My Sabby loves Spidey and my sweet friend Gina thoughtfully made her this dress. It's the best of both worlds- a twirly skirt but with tomboy flair. We both love it! Check out her facebook page, Baby Fish Designs. She makes all sorts of fun upcycled clothing, for girls, boys, and even dolls!

WIWW (What I Wore Wednesday)

So, for a long, long time I've followed The Pleated Poppy's "What I Wore Wednesday" posts (I love her style!) and have wanted to participate... so I finally moved a mirror to where I can take pictures of my outfit and am working on my self-portrait pics. :) It feels a little silly and self indulgent but at the same time, the way I dress is another creative outlet of mine so I thought it would be fitting to put it here on the ol' blog... so here goes! :)

The little girls and I went to a b'day party on Saturday so I wanted to wear something comfy but cute.

Purse- thrifted
White cardigan- thrifted

Hair Update

I didn't even think anyone would be all that interested in my hair post the other day, but since I've had some feedback from it, I'd thought I'd share a few things I've learned in this past week:

  • the coconut oil stuff is AWESOME! I got mine from the baking section in Walmart. I'm posting a video at the bottom of this post by Cute Girls Hairstyles, and she shows it in the video. I've learned that you can 1) put the coconut oil in your hair 30 minutes before washing for a treatment; 2) put it all over for a deep conditioning treatment and leave it in overnight before washing thoroughly; and 3) put a tiny amount on the bottom tips of your hair after washing as a conditioner. I've been using it the third way. My hair feels SO soft. I am constantly running my fingers through it now. The key is just using a tiny amount (I scoop it out of the container with my pinky nail!). You can learn all about it on the internet. This video has some great info about it; but there are tons of videos about it! I first learned about it from several of my friends who use it, and while I was skeptical at first, I'm a firm believer in it just from watching their useage of it. :)
  • I realized the other day that something that was making my hair all dried out feeling was also my use of hairspray (duh!). I didn't even connect it at first, but of course hairspray has tons of alcohol in it, which can dry out the hair super fast. I use this great super hold Aussie hair spray, which does a wonderful job at holding styles (especially curls!), but I need to make sure to use it sparingly.
  • I only washed my hair twice last week, and use the dry shampoo on the other days that it needed it. It smelled great and my friends in real life told me it looked great. Or they were lying to me. You never know. ;)
  • Oh, and to answer Carrie's question... nah, I really don't always get to shower every day. It's hard to do that with four kiddos! You grab them when you can get them! I do take a bubble bath almost every night during the winter time though... it's my way to unwind at the end of a crazy day.
And that's all my hair revelations. Who knew I would have so much to ramble on about? ;)

Oh, before I forget- here's the video from Cute Girls Hairstyles that shows the coconut oil and how to use it, and the dry shampoo that I use. I love her videos!

Hair Stuff

So I know probably most of you stop by my blog for the craftiness I post here, but y'all know me... I rarely can stay on topic.

I have always had this little pipe dream of going to cosmetology school. I still think it would be fun eventually. I love the idea of helping others find a little joy in the way they feel about their appearance.

Anyways, with that said, I'm always messing around with the girls' hair (we love to find new hairstyles to try online... our favorite is Cute Girls Hairstyles!) and my own. But I have worn my hair slap out with the flat iron and curling iron and other stuff.

I'm trying to do some things to help it be healthy again.

The other night, I tried out one of those home recipes for deep conditioning your hair (that I've seen 14,000 of pinned on pinterest).

This was my hair before:

And this was after (washing twice- it was still pretty greasy after one washing):

I was pretty impressed with how smooth it made the ends of my hair and how SOFT my hair felt! I definitely recommend it. I was looking for something to add shine back into my hair, but I think it will take some time of taking better care of it for that to really happen.

Some other things I'm doing:

  • weaning my hair/scalp from such frequent washings; no, I'm not crazy. It's actually bad for the balance of your scalp to put a detergent on it frequently. It starts over producing oils, which ends up being not so good for your hair. I picked up some Suave dry shampoo recommended to me (it's only $2.50 and it's worth the experiment) to help me ease my hair into not being washed quite as much (And for the record, I still shower every day- just don't wash my hair with shampoo every day!)
  • using Coconut oil rubbed into the ends of my hair; I have too many friends to count that swear by this!
  • laying off of the dang flat iron/curling iron! I'm addicted to it... I need intervention. :)
Anyways, that's my random hair update. What's your best hair tip you've ever tried out?

When the rain makes your internet go out...

what do you do?

Well, you read good books.
You light yummy candles. (I love that Bath & Body Works has the 3 for $5 small sample sized candles! They are perfect for trying out new scents.)

You scrapbook.

Created for NoelMignon using the sold out Study Hall kit.

Created for Lily Bee Design using Picket Fence, This & That, and Stationery.
 You organize your closet.

Before:

After:

All my tops are rolled and sorted by color in the bins; greens & blues, pinks & purples, blacks & neutrals, browns and yellows.
(We have a super small closet, and we're lucky to even have one! Our house was built before closets were popular. Crazy, huh? This hanging down shoe organizer is something I should have bought a long time ago. My closet is so much more tidy now. I love it.)

And that's what you do when the internet goes out! :) Maybe it should happen more often? Ha! May it never be!

I am thinking about taking a day each week to be "disconnected." Do any of you do it? What day do you pick- one that you know you'll already be busy on and you won't miss it as much, or another day where it's more noticeable?

Hair Stylin'

I was on pinterest the other day and through a variety of links, I found this video on how to do vintage style curls with NO heat.

It was VERY easy to do. It only took about 5 minutes to put up, and it doesn't have to be really precise. I do wish that I'd had some spray in gel or something like
that to use, and I'll probably grab some at the store to get for next time.

Here me and the girls are, with our hair put up for the night. This is how you have to wear it to achieve the curls.

Of course, the girls look ADORABLE like this:
....while I look like Grandma. Not the sexiest of hair styles for the hubs to come home to. ;)
BUT- this morning I took it out and it worked!
You can see the curls are pretty tight!
Here's Em's hair. It looks GORGEOUS, of course. :)

Next time I will make sure to use some gel to hold mine and keep away some frizz, and I need to make sure to do the back tighter because it didn't have as much curl. I will definitely be using this technique from now on.

(Oh, and Sabs took out her headband before she went to sleep, so we'll have to try hers again soon!)
