Sidetracked Home Executives Card File

I've been having a hard time lately with our new fall schedules... trying to figure out how to balance one kiddo in school, two others in Mom's Day Out, and doctor's appointments, birthday parties, story time at the library, and all the other chaos in between!

Whenever life starts getting extra hectic like this, I start really struggling with time management at home. I end up not starting stuff that *has* to get done because I get discouraged with the thought of being interrupted (one of the many pitfalls of perfectionism- if I can't do it right the first time, why bother at all?!). BUT- no one can function like that, right? And at the least, we'll never have clean undies. ;)

This is where I turn to the Sidetracked Home Executives system. Cheesy name, great system. :)

You can click here to read my full description of it on my blog from a few years ago. In a nutshell, you basically create an index card for each item that would be on a daily "to do" list, and a divider card for each day of the week.
I made an updated, simpler version for myself this week with a tin from the Target Dollar Spot and the Noel Mignon Sweet Sue kit -5 left! (plus some ribbon from my stash & some October Afternoon Mini Market stickers ).
I just need a way to keep me focused on the things each day I *must* accomplish, without being overwhelmed with seeing a whole list. Once I'm done with the task for the day, I move it behind the divider card for the next day.

I have other kinds of cards of things that aren't necessarily reminders (like I would ever forget that my kids are going to Mom's Day out!), but events that imply changes in my daily routines.

I also have cards for my design team assignments for each week, so I can work on them ahead of time and don't feel like I'm rushing to get things done the night beforehand. Setting aside time for me each day gives me more encouragement to keep going on the yucko tasks because I know that I will get time later, because I've planned for it! I also have things planned for like story time or craft time with my kids. They won't happen every day, but at least I know that there will be times for it.

  6. I would LOVE to see the whole list. I too am a list maker and perfectionist - although you'd never know by looking at my house. I'm totally an all or nothing person - and I hate that! If I can't do it all just perfect, why start. Not a good way to be...totally gettin ya on the no clean undies;) That's what I get to do today...laundry!

  13. I'd love to see the complete card list! This seems so much simpler than the full system with all the days for the month etc. all within the same box, I can understand having a month planned out almost but even so it must get confusing!
    this is SO cute!

  15. Love this card system! I've done the flylady off and on for several years, but it never "felt" right. I started using 3 x 5 cards on my own and then found out about the SHE system.....I can tweek it a little bit and it will work so much better for me.

I also love that you've made this so adorable....it would make me more likely to use it too!

    Thank you for sharing!

  17. Hi Virginia,

I also have 4 cherubs, and have Fly Lady'd on and off, but like the index cards. Would you mind sharing your complete list of cards? I use index cards for my kid's chores, so adding my own list should work well. I also love the little tin, do you recall where you got it? Did you make your own day of the week tabs, because they are cute (you could sell those). Thanks in advance!

  18. Can you send me the whole list? I've tried Fly-Lady also and just havn't been able to stick to it. The file cards are so broken down, I think that would work perfect.

  26. i would like a list too! i have been trying to find a way to get myself (and my house) organized. i am just like you!! i am a perfectionist, a compulsive clean freak, and i love the list idea and like you mentioned in your first blog, i sometimes try to get everything on a list and by the time it is all done it seems like too much!! i drive my boyfriend absolutely nuts with my "gotta do this, gotta do that, did you do get that done" lol so any advice on how to get things started is appreciated!! i have just started to attempt to create the household binder so we will see how that pans out!! looking forward to hearing from you! :0)

  27. If you're still offering your complete list, I would love one too please. Your box is just adorable...I think I might try my hand at making one for myself and my niece. We've both created binders, and like so many others here, we've tried the Flylady off and on, but there's still something missing....and it just might be an adorable yet functional box such as yours.
Thank you so much for both your creativity and your kindness.

By the way....if your creativity goes the way of making dolls too...drop on over to my site and pick up one of my free patterns if you like. I also have free ebooks and tutorials.

  30. I am in Australia and I also would like to see the whole list
I still try to do the flylady thing but get a bit lost sometimes
I started to this card system about 6 years ago but have had trouble getting the tabbed cards here, also cannot get coloured ones either
I was told with computers now businesses dont use card files anymore so they dont stock them
    Love the idea though
    thanks
